She placed her
hand on his arm, which he jerked away from her touch. “Jordan was going to tell
you about it this afternoon when he came by. I don’t know all of what went on,
so I thought it was best that he tell you everything. You know me; I’d rather
the information came straight from the person involved then give you wrong
information.”
Slowly his face
returned to its normal color. “I’m sorry. I just can’t picture him doing that.
He’s so easy-going. I’ve never seen him get riled over anything.”
“I wouldn’t have
believed it if I hadn’t seen it myself. When Troy and I got there, Toby was a
bloody mess and Jordan had his hands around his throat. Believe me; it took
both of us to get him away from Toby. Troy and I both got a good kick to the
ribs in. Jordan went to the emergency room to get his hands fixed up. I
wouldn’t be surprised if he had sprained or broken something. I wonder why he
went home instead of coming back up here.”
“I don’t know.
So what’s going to happen now?”
“I don’t know.
I’m going to head over to my office, see what I can find out and see if there’s
anything I can do. I really need a drink, a really stiff one.”
“Me too. Make
mine a double!”
Alicia smiled
weakly, “Don’t I wish.” She leaned down and pressed a kiss to his cheek. “I’ll
keep you updated. See you later.”
After Alicia
left, Ethan stretched then put his hands behind his head, closing his eyes. What the hell were you thinking, Jordan! Why
did you do it? These questions dominated his thoughts until he fell into a
restless sleep. The nightmare video of his gang-rape invaded his dreams. This
time, however, he was not the star. Jordan was. He was one of the rapists.
“No!” he yelled, bolting upright, eyes
wide with terror. His scream brought one of the nurses running.
“Mr. Evans. Mr.
Evans, are you all right?” Ethan continued to yell. After a few seconds, the
nurse realized he was still asleep. She grabbed his shoulders and shook him
gently. “Mr. Evans, wake up. You’re having a nightmare.” After a minute or so
the terror in his eyes receded as he woke up.
He grabbed onto
her, shaking uncontrollably and sobbing. It took several long minutes but she
was able to calm him down. Exhausted, Ethan collapsed back onto the bed. He
rubbed eyes with his fists. The nurse placed one of her hands on his shoulder.
“You had a bad nightmare. Would you like to talk about it?” Ethan shook his
head gently and went back to sleep.

“Hi, Ethan, how
are you today?” Dr. Benzik asked. “I understand you had some pretty bad dreams
last night. What to talk about them?”
“No. It was just
a dream.”
“Who are you
trying to convince, Ethan, you or me? It must be you, because you’re not
convincing me. The night nurse last night made a note in your file stating that
you started screaming and even though your eyes were open, you were still
asleep. She had a hard time waking you.”
Ethan said
defensively, “Like I said, it was just a dream.”
“Relax Ethan.
Something is deeply troubling you and I want to help you get past it.”
Ethan sighed,
“Okay. The video of me being gang-raped played over and over in my head. This
time it wasn’t me being raped, it was my best friend and I was the one who
instigated everything and raped him several times.”
“What do you
think brought this on?”
“I don’t know.”
“Okay, let’s
talk about your best friend. Tell me about him.”
“Doc, he one of
the greatest people I know. He was always sticking up for me whenever the
bullies in school started picking on me. I’d do anything for him.”
“Do you have
feelings for him? What’s his name?”
“Jordan, and
yeah, I love him like a brother. All of us do.”
“No romantic
inklings?”
“No, Jordan is
straight.”
“So why do you
think he became part of your dreams? Has anything happened with him recently?”
Ethan thought
hard for a few minutes before saying, “yesterday he was arrested for beating
the shit out of the guy who tried to kill me, who is the brother of my ex. They
never got along.”
“Who never got
along?”
“Jordan and my
ex. They could never be in the same room for more than a minute before they
started arguing, usually over me. Looking back, Jordan was always on my ex for
the way he treated me.”
“I think we
discussed how you were treated a few days ago. Do you think Jordan assaulting
the brother might have affected your dreams?”
“Maybe.”
“Tell you what.
Why don’t you think it over and we’ll talk later. Okay?”
“Sure Doc. See
you later.”

“Good afternoon.
This is Counselor Alicia Evans. I’m looking into an assault case involving
Jordan Mills and Toby Sims. Yes, I’ll hold.” She hummed to herself as she
waited for the court clerk to come back on line. “Yes. Thank you. Could you
please send me all the documentation to my workstation, XJC457QN9X? Thank you.”
Within seconds,
all of the paperwork appeared on her computer. She bit her lip as she viewed
the arrest report and the medical documentation. I’m not sure I can get you out of this one, Jordan. You really did a
number on him. After viewing and printing everything, she headed over to
the detention center to see Jordan.
“Hi, Alicia!
Thanks for coming to see me.”
“You’re welcome.
Before we get started, I thought you might want to talk to Ethan. Here.” She
dialed and handed her telecommunicator to Jordan.
“Hey, sis. What’s
up?”
“It’s me, Ethan.
How are you?
“Not so good. I
know about Toby. I don’t want to lose you… ever…”
